Romorantin, a Woman’s Dream

While the city may no longer shine as brightly today as it did in the 16th century, it was once a fleeting beacon that set out to guide an entire nation through its modernity.

At its helm was a woman—further proof of that modernity, and a significant one at that: the mother of the most powerful man in France at the time, King Francis I.

Serving as regent during her son’s military campaigns, she embodies a rare figure in history: a visionary strategist who rose far above the traditional role assigned to women of her era.

Her project? To transform Romorantin—her favored city—into an ideal capital capable of rivaling Paris. Why this choice? The answer lies in a single word: security. In the wake of the Hundred Years' War, Paris remained vulnerable. Louise of Savoy, however, envisioned a modern city protected by reinforced ramparts, paved streets, and a revolutionary water management system.

She invested her personal fortune in the project, even importing 80,000 Burgundian vine cuttings, thereby giving rise to the "Romorantin" grape variety, which is still cultivated today.

Yet her genius extended beyond urban planning. She deeply influenced her son, inspiring the idea of a kingdom refocused and shielded from external threats. Captivated by this bold vision, Francis I also saw an opportunity to blend French heritage with Italian innovations, symbolized by the arrival of Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise. Together, mother and son dreamed of a city where water, harnessed by a two-level canal system, would become the city's beating heart.

Louise of Savoy, a woman of power and letters, demonstrates that a vision can transcend the ages. His dream, though unfulfilled, left indelible marks on the landscape and local history—traces you are invited to discover during your stay at our hotel.
